The Voiced-voiceless Distinction in Four-year-old Children
نویسنده
چکیده
Learning to speak is a more complex task than just discovering the articulatory movements required for the production of speech segments. Most children learn to recognize and produce the sounds of their language community quite early and grow gradually towards the complex patterns of adult phonology. In general, phonological theories present extensive descriptions about sound structures in many languages and studies on phonological development are going to be related more and more to the adult phonological characteristics. Data of child language offer a certain accessibility to sound structures and the acquisition process in the child can often be recognized as a basis for related empirical studies, such as phonetics. The technical description of speech sounds at a segmentalleve1 can provide detailed information about: the developing language system in terms ofphonemic distinctions the developing articulatory skills and knowledge about speech production

Very sharp discrimination functions for the timing of voice onset relative to stop release characterize perceptual boundaries between certain pairs of stop consonants for adult speakers of many languages. To explore how these discriminations depend on experience, their development was studied among Kikuyu children, whose native language contains no stops in which voicing is substantially delaye...

In an investigation of the speech of layngedomized speakers we presently focus on their ability to distinguish behoeen voiced and voiceless speech sounds. Some of them are able to produce this distinction clearly in some contexts and it is quite remarkable considering the structure of the pharyngo-esophageal entrance, serving as the post-operative voice source. However, there are a number of ac...

In Canadian French, besides periodic phonation, other cues can be associated with the voiced-voiceless distinction due to the application of phonological rules. These cues, mainly duration and vowel quality, may be present in the consonant itself (voiced consonants are shorter than their voiceless counterparts) and in the preceding vowels (duration and vowel quality). The cues are related to th...

In this study, the compensatory strategies speakers adopt for conveying the voiced-voiceless distinction of consonants in whispered speech were investigated. Of 8 native Dutch speaking subjects each, 26 Dutch minimal word pairs containing voiced and voiceless obstruents, were recorded. Acoustic analysis with the software Praat revealed that both in whisper and in normal speech (1) preceding vow...
